What’s the difference between the TailTag, 4G, and Pro ranges?

TailTag

Uses the “Find My” network of nearby Apple & Android devices. Best for pets in urban areas where you don’t need live tracking. It’s cost-effective with a long battery duration.

4G Range

Uses the 4G cellular network for live, real-time GPS tracking. A great all-around option for reliable tracking, though GPS can struggle indoors. Features a speaker for audible tracking.

Pro Range

Uses the advanced NB-IoT network and a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi beacon for superior indoor tracking and the longest battery life. This is our premium option for the most comprehensive tracking possible.

What’s the best tracker for a cat? And how do I choose the right size?

The Agile 4G and Agile Pro are specifically designed for smaller pets (cats and dogs typically under 4kg). Cats/dogs are incredibly strong—they can carry large prey up a tree backwards—so they handle a lightweight tracker with ease. With that in mind, do consider that the Infinity range may still be a suitable option for your pet.

Comfortable fit

When choosing a size, don’t just focus on your pets weight. The best fit is determined by the trackers length relative to your pet’s chest. If the tracker fits within your cat or dogs chest then it wont bother them while walking or moving around.

If the tracker fits comfortably within the width of their chest, it will be comfortable for them. For pets over 4kg, even our largest tracker (at only 39 grams) is light enough.

The Agile model in the 4G or Pro range is our smaller model however we suggest the Infinity model where applicable as the bigger device will have a bigger battery and therefore last for a longer duration.

How do you find a lost cat or dog with our GPS Pet Trackers?

Our trackers use a combination of technologies to help you find your lost pet.

GPS

This is the foundation of our GPS Pet Tracking solution. It uses satellite signals to pinpoint your pet’s location with high accuracy, usually within a few meters.

Wifi Positioning

Our 4G and Pro trackers use a Google-maintained database of known Wi-Fi hotspots to determine a location, which is excellent for improving accuracy in urban areas and indoors.

LBS

When GPS and Wi-Fi positioning aren’t available, the GPS Pet tracker uses nearby cell towers to give an approximate location.

Putting it all Together

Every piece of information is a clue. For example, if you only get an LBS location, it tells you your pet is likely not outdoors with a clear view of the sky. This helps you narrow down the search radius and find your pet faster.

How GPS Pet Trackers work?

At its core, a GPS tracker operates in a two-step process. What’s the difference between GPS, Bluetooth, and Radio Frequency (RF) trackers?

This is a key distinction. GPS trackers are the gold standard for finding a lost pet because they offer virtually unlimited range; as long as the device can get a satellite signal and connect to a cell network, you can find your pet from anywhere. Bluetooth trackers, like Apple AirTags, are designed for short-range locating, like finding your keys in the house. Their effectiveness for a lost pet is limited as it relies on being within close proximity to another person’s phone in the network. Radio Frequency (RF) trackers are a niche option that can work in areas with no cell service, but they have a limited point-to-point range, typically just a few kilometers at most.

How accurate is the location tracking?

Accuracy is a primary concern for any pet owner. The precision of a tracker can vary, but most modern GPS devices are highly accurate, often pinpointing your pet’s location within a few meters. High-end models can provide location updates every few seconds, offering true real-time tracking, while others may have a slight delay to conserve battery. Factors like a clear view of the sky versus being in a dense urban area can slightly affect GPS signal strength and accuracy.

Will it work in my area (rural vs. urban)?

Coverage depends entirely on the technology. Our GPS pet trackers are cellular-based, meaning they require a mobile network connection to send location data to your phone. This provides excellent coverage in most urban and suburban areas. In very remote or rural locations with poor or non-existent mobile service, their functionality can be limited.

Does the tracker work indoors?

GPS signals struggle to penetrate solid structures like roofs and walls, which can be a problem if your pet is hiding inside a building. To solve this, our advanced trackers use alternative positioning technologies. They can detect nearby Wi-Fi networks or the pro range connects to designated Bluetooth beacons to provide a highly accurate indoor location.

A tracker is only effective if it’s practical for daily use. This means it needs to be durable, comfortable for your pet, and have a battery that lasts.

How long does the battery last?

Battery life is one of the most critical factors for pet owners. The duration can vary significantly, from a day to multiple days or even months, depending on the model, how often it updates the location, and how active your pet is. Our GPS pet trackers offer a balance of performance and longevity, and will send you a low-battery alert on your phone, giving you ample time to recharge it. Although, best practice is to charge it every day :).

Is the tracker waterproof and durable?

Pets run, dig, swim, and play in all conditions. Our pet trackers must be built to withstand this active lifestyle. Our trackers are fully waterproof with an IP67 rating, meaning they can survive being submerged in water. Durability against shocks and scratches is also essential to ensure the device keeps working through all their adventures.

What is the size and weight of the tracker?

Comfort is non-negotiable. This is an especially important question for owners of cats and small dogs, as a device that is too heavy or bulky can be uncomfortable and even unsafe. Our trackers range from 9 grams to 39 grams so are very suited towards all types of pets.

How does the tracker attach to the collar?

The attachment mechanism needs to be both secure and versatile. Our pet trackers use a silicone sleeve that fits snugly onto your pet’s existing collar or harness. It’s crucial that this attachment is robust enough to prevent the tracker from getting knocked off during vigorous play. Spares are available.

Cost and Subscriptions

This is a very common and important question. Our GPS Pet trackers app is included at no extra cost. there is however a continuous cost of using a sim card – but that cost will be with yourself and your network provider.

My pet is microchipped, do I still need a GPS tracker?

This is a frequent point of confusion. Microchips and GPS trackers serve two very different but complementary purposes. A microchip is a passive identification device. If your lost pet is found, a vet or shelter can scan the chip to get your contact information. However, it cannot help you find your pet. A GPS tracker is an active and real-time recovery system that allows you to track your pet’s location yourself and bring them home safely.

Why can’t I just use an Apple AirTag?

While tempting due to their low cost, Bluetooth trackers like AirTags are not a completely reliable solution for finding a lost, moving pet. Their functionality depends on being within a short Bluetooth range (about 20 meters) of a person’s phone that is part of the device’s network. If your pet wanders into a rural area, a forest, or even a quiet neighborhood with few people, the AirTag is unlikely to update its location. A true GPS tracker has its own cellular connection and works independently, providing a far more reliable solution.

Can I set up “safe zones” or virtual fences?

Yes, and this is one of the most popular features of modern pet trackers. Known as geofencing, it allows you to draw a virtual boundary on the map in your app, such as around your garden or neighborhood. If your pet ever crosses this line, you will receive an instant escape alert on your smartphone, allowing you to react quickly before they get too far. NB. for a geofence to work well it needs a frequent GPS interval which uses more battery power.

Can I track my pet’s activity and health?

The simple answer is no :). GPS pet trackers are purpose built for location tracking. That said our Pro range can track steps. For the most part, health monitors aren’t accurate enough in their current form to be a great choice.

Can I track more than one pet in the app?

Absolutely. For families with multiple cats and dogs, our app for the 4G, TailTags and Pro range are designed to manage more than one device. You can create a profile for each pet and view all of their locations and activity data conveniently from a single dashboard on your phone.

Are pet trackers safe? Is the radiation harmful?

Your pet’s health is the top priority. Owners are rightly concerned about placing an electronic device on their animal 24/7. Our GPS Pet trackers are designed to be safe and operate well within established international safety limits for radio frequency exposure, emitting levels comparable to or lower than standard cell phones.

Does the collar have a safety or breakaway buckle?

This is a crucial safety feature, especially for cats. Cats are climbers and can easily get their collars snagged on branches or fences. A breakaway collar is designed to snap open under pressure, freeing the cat and preventing serious injury or choking. We don’t supply a collar. It is highly recommended to attach any device to a suitable type of collar.
